Career Profile: What Is the Role of a Deputy Care Manager?

A deputy care manager helps to oversee the operations of a care service. Learn more about this role in our guide to what a deputy care manager does.

What is the role of a deputy care manager?

A deputy care manager works closely with the care manager, supporting them with day-to-day running of the care service. You will help to ensure that staff are motivated and that care of the highest possible standard is being provided.

Responsibilities of a deputy care manager can include, but are not limited to:

  • Helping to recruit and train staff
  • Managing and supervising staff
  • Assisting the manager with planning and organisation
  • Making sure regulatory requirements are met
  • Covering for the manager when they have time off

What skills do you need to be a deputy care manager?

To be a deputy care manager, you will need skills including:

  • Team leadership skills
  • People management skills
  • Communication skills
  • Skills in supervision and performance management
  • Organisational skills
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements

Ideally you should have some experience of working in social care. Many deputy care managers progress to this role from a more junior position within the care service.

What qualifications do you need to be a deputy care manager?

A deputy care manager is typically expected to have at least a Level 2 or Level 3 diploma in Adult Care.

If you don’t already have management qualifications, such as a Level 4 or Level 5 diploma, you will undertake them in the role. These will also be important if you want to potentially progress from deputy manager to manager in the future.

At Care Managers Show, we offer a programme of free CPD training. Past events have included expert-led sessions on compassionate leadership, having difficult conversations, budget management, apprenticeships and more.
